IYAMAH
Known as ‘IYAMAH’, Sophie Bond grew up on the sounds of African drumming and reggae music in the seaside town of Brighton. Immersed in the festival culture, iyamah was raised by her artistic mother, who encouraged Iyamah to have a creative upbringing. She started singing from an early age, copying soul singers like Alicia Keys and Adele from the radio. At 13 she picked up piano and started writing songs, but kept them for her own expression, just like a diary. It wasn’t until she started singing lessons during school when Iyamah’s teacher got her singing big soul hits by Whitney Houston, Etta James and Aretha Franklin at her plays each year, where Iyamah was able to stand out and be heard. The empowering female artists later developed her taste for Neo-soul and hiphop under the likes of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu.
