Following back-to-back sell out shows, including All Quiet on the Western Front and Tobacco Road, Incognito return, in their award-winning physical style, with a formidable tale of corruption, persecution and roaring rage. The Burning explores the derogatory depictions of women who do not conform, who live on the fringes of society and who challenge established patriarchal structures. It boldly takes on the anarchic nature of witches.
The Burning follows the lives of ‘witches’ and their hunters in an epic story through time. Incognito’s all-female creative team use live music and true historical accounts to breathe life into mysterious fiery worlds. Exposing the effects of capitalism and fear, it interrogates and lacerates the endless female trade-off between goodness and power.
Unearthing the complexities behind the definition of a ‘witch’, the production goes back to the origins of the word to explore the moments in history that fractured it into the simplistic duality of the fairy tale image – an ugly hag or the puritan image of the hyper-sexualised woman who cavorts with devils. The Burning unapologetically celebrates womanhood, examining our connection to our ancestors in that we must know where we came from to move forward.
Director Roberta Zuric comment, It's a joy to be back working with Incognito on a brand new show. It feels like we’re at a global turning point in the way we think about gender and identity, and Incognito's style will bring an interesting and vibrant angle to the conversation. Working with a brilliant all-female team, I'm looking forward to delving deep into and examining our society's relationship and history to the word 'witch'.
