Stile Antico are one of the world’s leading a cappella ensembles.
Palestrina’s stellar career was inextricably entwined with the Papacy and the great churches of Rome for which he composed. This programme explores the music he would have sung at the Sistine Chapel, the changes in his style demanded by the Counter-Reformation, his tragic personal life, and his influence on his successors.
The repertoire is sumptuous, including several of Palestrina’s most beloved and timeless motets and excepts from the timeless masterpiece which is Missa Papae Marcelli.
Stile Antico review – ‘acute listening, gorgeous lines and serene beauty’
Stile Antico
A British early music vocal ensemble comprising 12 young singers, many of whom are former Oxbridge scholars. Noted for their stage presence and spontaneous style, they won the inaugural Audience Prize at the Early Music Network International Young Artists' Competition in York in 2005. The have twice attracted GRAMMY nominations and their release Song of Songs won the 2009 Gramophone Award for Early Music and reached the top of the US Classical Chart. Working without a conductor, the members each contribute artistically to the result. Their performances are repeatedly praised for their vitality and commitment, expressive lucidity and imaginative response to text.
